Evidence -based Practice Certificate/Master of Science of Nursing, UT El Paso
Expected completion: May 2008
Tell us a little about what you do as a healthcare professional…
I am a nurse educator for the medical/surgical division at Midland Memorial Hospital. I provide in-service for staff and encourage them to continue their education. Additionally, I write policy, serve on various committees and work with students during their clinical studies here.
Why did you choose to pursue your master’s degree online?
When I was shopping for a graduate program I needed one that fit where I am, in my life. I needed to be able to continue my full-time work, and go to class in non-work hours. It’s great studying online because I can do my work at 2 a.m. or at 2 p.m., whichever is better for me that day.
Your certificate program requires that you identify a clinical problem and research best evidence to support a practice change. What did you choose to evaluate and has that been a benefit to your work?
I have been researching the best facilitators for evidence-based practice (EBP). The abstract from my project was accepted at the EBP summer conference in San Antonio. It’s helped me in my work. I’ve started teaching other divisional educators at the hospital about evidence-based practice. Next, I’ll be conducting a survey of readiness, and then I’ll begin educating our staff about EBP.
I’ve recommended this program to other nurses I’ve worked with. I explain how it fits into their work place, and that the time required for the classes is more than worth it for what they learn and the tools they can take into their practice.
Do you want to offer any advice to students considering this program?
If you’re unfamiliar with online learning I’d suggest you have a buddy take the class with you. It helps to have that support system. I’ve found I’m actually becoming a mentor/support person for many nurses returning to school who are a bit insecure about their abilities with online classes.
