Frequent Student Comment/Director Response
Every long semester we ask UTTC students to complete a short survey about our services. Survey responses are anonymous, and students often use this opportunity to discuss issues and to share suggestions.
Lately, the topic of community building has come up. In this issue of UT4Me, we would like to highlight one student’s comment about this (Spring 2007 UTTC Survey) and give the UTTC Director, Rob Robinson, a forum to respond.
Student Comment:
“I think it would be nice to have some way to network with all students in the TeleCampus programs. Being a distance learner really segregates you from the academic community. Perhaps some kind of general discussion board area. It would be helpful for new-comers that have lots of questions, as well as asking for advice on which courses to take, random technical problems, etc.”
UTTC Director:
“Great idea. We are always looking at ways to foster community building. In fact, at one time we created a series of organizations within Blackboard with exactly that goal in mind. These organizations allowed discussions and information sharing, and were centered around degree programs and interests. Frankly they were underutilized. There is a need for a core group of participants to keep these forums alive, and there just wasn't that critical mass of interest. Given the low use and the fact that it takes a fair amount of administrative work on the part of TeleCampus staff to keep them updated and available for use, we made a decision to eliminate them. When we asked students why they did not use the organizations, many told us that as busy working professionals they were much more interested in focusing on their individual courses than in establishing online relationships outside of those courses. However, we feel strongly that the best learning takes place in a community environment. We would very much like to explore new ways to allow student-to-student discussion to happen outside of the classes themselves. We are open to suggestions!"
