IOL 2008 Pre-conference Workshops

10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.Developing Courses with UTTC
Presented by: UT System, UT TeleCampus
No fee (This session is limited to 30 participants.)This workshop will focus on general learning theory in instructional design, best practices in online course design, UTTC production processes, and customizable development templates and tools. Attendance is restricted to course development staff at UT System institutions. Basic familiarity with some course management system (not necessarily Blackboard) and the primary components of an online course (content, communication, and assessment) and some experience with HTML and graphics is suggested. Each participant must bring a wireless-capable laptop.
Participants will:
- Gain exposure to what faculty learn in UTTC Faculty Training
- Insures faculty and course developers are speaking the same language
- Understand what faculty expect from campus course developers
- Assures faculty expectations are met
- Develop methods for guiding development toward best practices
- Maximizes the potential that student learning will be fully served
- Recognize key steps in the UTTC course development process
- Prevents misunderstanding of course development responsibilities
- Become familiar with efficient development techniques
- Optimizes course development workload through templates

This 3 hour workshop introduces faculty to designing and developing engaging online interactions using Adobe Flash CS3. Participants must bring their own laptop. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

- Demonstrate familiarity with the Adobe Flash CS3 working environment.
- Design and develop some basic Flash interactions useful for student engagement in learning.
- Discuss the advantages of incorporating Flash interactions into instructional materials.

Assessing Technology and Student Outcomes
Presented by: UT Austin, Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment
Fee $20The intended audience are faculty who use innovations in technology (both online and other) in their teaching, and staff who support these technologies. This workshop will facilitate participants acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct a best practices technology assessment. After attending this workshop participants will be able to:
- Understand the technology assessment process
- Plan their own technology assessment
- Choose appropriate data gathering methods
- Use assessment findings to make recommendations
