Master of Science in Human Resource Development Woman at her computerThe online Master of Science in Human Resource Development (HRD) non-thesis option is a 36-semester credit hour program designed to give you the flexibility of web-based instruction while meeting your academic needs. All coursework can be completed at a distance.

This collaborative degree is conferred by The University of Texas at Tyler (UTT). Support courses are offered by UT El Paso, UT Pan American, and UT Permian Basin. All academic institutions within The UT System are accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In addition, the courses are taught by the same faculty who teach the courses on-campus.

The professional field of Human Resource Development encompasses education and training, training and development, employee development, technical training, management development, executive and leadership development, human performance technology, organization development, and organizational learning. The purpose of HRD is to improve performance by developing and unleashing human expertise through organization development and personnel training and development.

Professionals such as corporate and government trainers; faculty members; administrators in primary, secondary, higher, and adult education; curriculum designers; consultants; corporate HR directors; HRD consultants; state agency directors; and those in the business/industry and military fields would benefit from the program.

The department also offers two certification programs for secondary level Texas teachers:

Trade and Industrial
Health Science Technology

To obtain these certifications, candidates must meet the requirements of the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How many semester credit hours are required to complete the program? The program is a non-thesis 36-semester credit hour degree requiring two core courses, 18 found in the area of concentration (HRD) and 12 semester hours of support courses. Candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive examination upon completion of the coursework. To obtain one of the certifications, candidates must meet the requirements of the State Board of Teacher Certification.
  • How much will it cost? Students are billed by the campus hosting the course. Links to campus tuition and fee information can be found on the cost & financial information page.
  • Will I have to visit any of the participating campuses? The MS degree will be offered predominantly using the Internet, but may include supplemental materials such as video/audio tapes and CD-ROM. Students will not be required to attend the campuses at any time.

GETTING STARTED

To participate in the online program, you must apply to and be accepted by UT Tyler. Criteria, procedures and deadlines for admission are the same as the traditional residence program. Upon successful completion of requirements, UT Tyler confers the degree.

For admissions information, please link to the UT Tyler graduate admissions page. On the website, you will find a graduate program application in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. Please indicate on the application that you are an online student. This application must be completed before a student can enroll in the M.S. HRD degree courses. Before a student completes nine hours of coursework in the program, application must be made to the Department of Technology.

Admission to the program requires a satisfactory score on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and a satisfactory undergraduate grade point average. Students who do not meet the minimum requirements for admission may be allowed to take up to 9 semester hours of graduate work in technology before being formally admitted to the graduate program. A student pursuing this option will be evaluated based on their official test scores and the GPA earned in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Students must earn at least a 3.0 GPA in graduate technology coursework taken at The University of Texas at Tyler before being recommended for full admission to the program.

During the last semester of the program, the candidate must successfully complete a written and/or oral comprehensive examination on the course work of the degree plan. This examination will be administered and evaluated by the student's advisor and at least two other professors from the Department of Technology at UT Tyler.

Students completing the certification courses must meet the requirements of the State Board for Educator Certification. Current guidelines for this program can be accessed at their website or through the Texas Education Agency website for Career and Technology.
