The 36-hour Master of Arts in Teaching – Science Education (MAT-SE) Online program, offered by the University of Texas at Dallas, stresses training in the art of teaching and advanced knowledge in the natural science selected for major specialization. The program is designed for individuals with significant ability in a discipline and a serious commitment to teaching.
Emphasizing current issues in science and education, the program goal is to merge educational theory and scientific practice to prepare educators to foster a thorough understanding of concepts and the ability to process knowledge. Graduates at all levels (K- life) in private/public schools, community colleges, universities, business and industry, will be prepared to take the lead in determining the interdisciplinary perspective needed to interpret and manage the diverse requirements of science education, an area of critical importance across Texas and the nation.
All students seeking the MAT-SE Online degree must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 36 graduate semester hours. This is comprised of 15 hours in science education (9 core hours and a minimum of 6 thesis hours); 15 hours in science content (9 required integrated science hours plus 6 hours in a chosen science field); and 6 hours of approved electives. Up to 12 hours may be accepted as transfer credit on approval of the Department Head. Among others, potentially acceptable online courses are currently available through the UT TeleCampus from 7 institutions: UT Arlington, UT Dallas, UT El Paso, UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, UT Permian Basin, UT Tyler, and UT Medical Branch at Galveston.
