This 2-course, 9-credit post-baccalaureate certificate series is designed for nurses or other health care professionals who desire to increase skills and knowledge in evidence-based practice. Focus is on developing and implementing the evidence-based practice skills necessary to translate research into practice for the overall purpose of safe and effective health care. Nurses completing this certificate program will be eligible to apply for the Nurse Clinician Education (NCE) Major leading to a Master of Science degree in nursing.
Evidence-based practice is a decision-making model that incorporates best evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values and preferences. During the 2-semester series, we take a practical approach that allows participants sufficient time to identify a clinical problem in their own facilities, to research and synthesize best evidence to support a practice change, and then to implement and evaluate the practice change. Faculty and peers provide guidance and support to ensure success. Examples of evidence-based practice changes in the work setting include implementation of multi-focus fall prevention program in a long term care facility, group advising in an ADN program, standard of care to maintain normothermia in surgical patients, interdisciplinary triage to improve flow in the emergency department (ED), and policy and procedure for use of EMLA cream prior to pediatric IV insertions in a rural hospital.
Required courses:
- NURS 5423 Evidence-based Practice I
- NURS 5524 Evidence-based Practice II
