Course Description

This course is designed to illustrate the application of research techniques to business decision-making. Experience is gained in using the scientific method to define research problems, design a research project, and to collect, analyze, record and interpret data. Techniques and procedures of writing a formal report are examined.


Objectives

This course will:

  • Explain the value and importance of research to management and the potential problems which complicate the successful integration of research and management objectives.
  • Define the nature of the research process.
  • Show that the process of business research is grounded in a management problem that flows from a hierarchy of research questions.
  • Demonstrate that the conduct of research is an intellectual process involving concepts, constructs, operational definitions, hypotheses, theories, and the inference process.
  • Identify major experimental designs and make appropriate choices of design type for specific research situations.
  • Provide an examination of the measurement process using a number of different scale types.
  • Distinguish between primary and secondary sources of information and show that secondary sources of information are valuable and economical for management research.
  • Identify major techniques by which primary data are collected and examine the major strengths and weaknesses of each technique.
  • Explain an instrument development process that combines the question hierarchy concept and logical design sequence.
  • Learn the basics of writing and presenting an acceptable research report.
