Course Description
Study of the development and functioning of the unique United States health system, including structural, political and economic factors that dictate access, quality and costs of health services.
Course Objectives
The instructional goals focus on preparing the student to apply acquired knowledge and skills to analysis of a variety of health care organizations and enterprises. The student will be able to:
- explain the historical backdrop to our current healthcare system, and how and why the American system developed into its current form and function
- conceptualize the interrelationships among the various stakeholders with an eye on dynamic forces operating to bring about change in system design and activity
- apply various intellectual tools, perspectives and methods in critical analysis of the American system of health delivery
- refine insight and understanding and use various terms and concepts necessary to actively engage in the broad conversation about healthcare in our culture.
