Course Title: Curricular Innovations
Campus Course Code: KINE 6381
UTTC Course Code: KINO 6350
Campus: UT Permian Basin
Program: Kinesiology
Course Description
This course has been designed to develop your critical thinking about the process of curriculum development and the accompanying theories to help you, as a teacher or coach, provide theory-centered programming to your students and athletes.
Course Goals
The focus of this course is on clarifying a personal philosophy of physical education and fundamental concepts of curriculum theory in order to improve one’s ability to use them to analyze the curriculum development process and develop a physical education curriculum. We will identify some of the sources of influence on the nature of the physical education curriculum and seek to understand the reasons for various curriculum models and the theoretical principles underlying those reasons. Students will develop an understanding of the theoretical foundation which stimulated the beginning of these models, apply program goals within a curricular design process, relate a conceptual framework with the elements included in the curricular design process, apply research strategies to determine the physical activity and nutritional habits of individuals in society, take the NASPE benchmarks of a physically educated person and apply them within a conceptual framework and corresponding curricular design process, design an instructional unit plan from a design-down process, and design specific lesson plans related to the assigned instructional unit plan. Students will be able to describe the research findings associated with these tactical models, how the research affects the curricular design process using these models, the theories related to program evaluatino in physical education, and the various types of evaluation processes and models available.
