Course Title: Sport and Society
Campus Course Code: KINE 6340
UTTC Course Code: KINO 6330
Campus: UT Permian Basin
Program: Kinesiology
Course Description

In this course, you will examine sport from a sociological perspective. You will be asked to question what you know about sport and socialization. Some of what you believe sport is will be demonstrated to be false. Much of what you believe about sport will be strengthened. You will, most likely, see sport and society from a different perspective as the course concludes. This course has been developed in order for you to take a critical look at the world of sport. As you complete the course, you will examine how sport functions within American society to reinforce cultural ideology as individuals go through the socialization process. You will see how sport functions within various segments of society and within its institutions to maintain the status quo. Gender Logic, Class Logic and Race Logic should become clearly identifiable. You will be able to identify and refute several of the myths associated with sport and sports participation. Ultimately, I hope that the course helps you to raise important questions concerning sport and to gain a better understanding of your place within society and why you believe the things you do. Sport is what we make it. Society is what we make it.
