Course Title: Applied Sport Psychology
Campus Course Code: KINE 6322
UTTC Course Code: KINO 6322
Campus: UT Permian Basin
Program: Kinesiology
Course Description
Students will develop an array of mental training techniques that have been used successfully by athletes and coaches to improve sport performance. How to use each technique as an athlete and teach it as a coach will be the primary objectives. This course takes an educational approach toward performance enhancement, not a clinical one. The mental training techniques include imagery, arousal regulation, somatic and cognitive stress management, concentration and attention control, positive self-talk, and goal setting.
Objectives
The students will be able to
- describe the theories, principles and research studies that support the use of psychological skills by athletes to enhance their performance and enjoyment of the sport experience.
- describe various psychological skills and mental training techniques including their application to sport and other competitive situations.
- demonstrate the use various mental training techniques themselves.
- demonstrate their ability to teach various mental training techniques to others.
- gather information (e.g., journal articles, website material, etc.) that contains information about the use of psychological skills in a sport of their own choosing. The expectation is that this information will be used in the preparation of the PST program, so the sports selected would be the same. However, that need not be the case.
- design a Psychological Skills Training (PST) program that demonstrates the students' ability to apply the information and techniques studied in this course to their own particular real or hypothetical sport team situation.
