Course Title: Family-Centered Early Intervention
Campus Course Code: PHYT 6360
Campus: UT Medical Branch at Galveston
Program: IMPRINTS
Course Description
In this course, therapists will examine what it means to have a family-centered practice in early intervention. Whether working in an NICU or an early intervention program, the therapist will have more success if adopting a family-centered approach. Concepts to be explored include ‘what is a family?’, parent coping strategies, parent learning strategies, mental health issues which affect intervention, accessing community resources, and helping families make decisions about intervention options. Therapists will discover and share how they can help the infant by helping the family. The course will utilize readings, information searching, discussion board, and observations in the therapist’s own community.
Students will be given the opportunity to develop advanced knowledge and skill in family-centered and community-based practice.
