Course Description
This course will examine the role of the therapist in the NICU, developmental capabilities of full-term and preterm infants, medical management of high risk infants, and equipment and personnel utilized in the NICU. The signs of physical stress demonstrated by a high risk infant are explained, as well as interventions that can be used to reduce that stress. Intervention strategies for positioning and feeding are outlined, as well as issues related to prolonged NICU stays, transitions to home, and follow-up care. The course will utilize readings from a textbook and other web-based sites, discussion boards, and clinical observations in the learner’s own community, when possible.
Students will be given the opportunity to develop advanced knowledge and skill in therapeutic intervention in neonatal intensive care settings.

Prerequisites: Students must be a licensed professional P.T., O.T., or Speech Pathologist. Other licensed health care providers may be accepted with the permission of the instructor.
