Course Description

The focus of this course is an application of the nursing process to promote wellness and manage occurrences of health care needs in individuals, families and community. Community Experience practicum is required in a community setting.

This course was designed for registered nurses and builds upon previous academic preparation in nursing and one’s experience as a practicing registered nurse. This course is one of two community health nursing courses that are part of the RN/BSN curriculum. This course focuses more on individuals and families within the community; whereas the other community health course focuses on populations within the community setting.


Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Utilize nursing models and processes which emphasize critical thinking within the community setting.
  2. Apply epidemiological process to identify occurrences of health care needs within a community.
  3. Implement teaching-learning plans which are based on theory to promote health with persons throughout the life span, families and communities.
  4. As a client advocate, use theory to effect change in health compromising environments and personal behaviors.
  5. Promote, protect, maintain and restore health with families and community by applying results of research and epidemiological studies of persons throughout the life span, families and communities.
