Course Description

The focus of this course is an analysis of leadership and management issues within the health care delivery system with a focus on their use by the nursing discipline.

This course was designed for registered nurses and builds upon previous academic preparation in nursing and one's experience as a practicing registered nurse. This course is part of the RN/BSN curriculum and focuses on critical thinking skills in addressing both client care problems and providing leadership in the healthcare agency.


Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Examine the relationship between issues associated with healthcare delivery and the economy based on cultural, demographic, and life span changes.
  • Examine the relationship between healthcare delivery and the local, regional, and national political environment.
  • Use the management process to assess a health care agency's delivery system.
  • Critique research studies focusing on various models of healthcare delivery systems used to manage comprehensive care.
  • Analyze a strategic plan that provides for long term quality health services.
  • Identify strategies for influencing peers and team members to accomplish the healthcare goals of the agency.
  • Examine the use of information technologies in healthcare.
  • Demonstrate the use of effective interpersonal communication skills and management techniques needed in the nursing leadership role.
  • Describe the legal responsibilities of a nurse leader/manager as client advocate.
  • Exercise critical thinking to conceptualize and analyze possible solutions to a practical experience incident.
