Course Title: Current Topics in Mathematics Education: Learning Theory
Campus Course Code: MTED 5318
Campus: UT El Paso
Program: ATCP
Course Description

This course is designed for graduate students to develop competencies necessary to deal effectively with mathematics instruction. The course work focuses on the critical features central to the mathematical understanding of all students. These features include the roles of curriculum, mathematical concepts, teaching strategies, and skills necessary to develop pedagogical-content knowledge.

The fundamental core of effective teaching mathematics combines an understanding of how children learn, how to promote that learning by teaching through problem solving, and how to plan and assess that learning on a daily basis. The first part of the course will provide perspectives on trends in mathematics education and the process of doing mathematics and develop the core ideas of learning, teaching, assessment, and planning. Additionally, perspectives on mathematics for special children and the role of technology are also discussed. The second part serves as the application of the core ideas in the first part of the course. Numerous problem-based activities to engage students are interwoven with the discussion of the mathematical content and how children develop their understanding of that content.
