Course Description
LING 3314 presents for active exploration the major structural features of English. The topics covered include the sound system of English, basic morpho-phonemics of noun and verb inflection, basic clause types, lexical sub-categorization, the structure of the verb phrase, adjective classes and functions, questions and negation, a range of subordination and complementation structures, and sentences that show focus or emphasis. Students enrolled in this course will be expected to respond to opportunities to engage actively and collaboratively in learning activities that promote mastery of these topics. As a course designed to resource pre-service and in-service teachers of English, notes on general pedagogical implications of the material are included and this dimension will be further elaborated in class-specific assignments and discussion. This course can be taken for either English or Linguistics credit.
