Course Description
The focus of this course is twofold. First is serves as an introduction to human growth and development from a Psychosocial approach. Secondly students will learn about the history of special education litigation and legislation and the relationship of special and general education in the public school system. This course is specifically geared towards teachers enrolled in the ATCP. Course content includes typical development (cognitive, language, physical, motor, social, and personality) from birth through young adulthood a well as variations of typical development and accommodations made within the education system to include federal, state, local, and school-based decisions in instruction, curriculum and law.
Course Objectives
In EDPC 5370, Developmental Variations and Learning Differences,
- You will develop knowledge of current theories in the areas of cognitive development, language, motor, and social development and skills in each of these areas to determine the applications of these theories to the education of children and youth.
- You will explore ways in which the diverse needs of public school students are met in compliance with federal and state mandates, which assure free appropriate public education to all students (FAPE).
- You will become familiar with the characteristics of and educational implications for those students with disabilities in the Texas public education system.
- You will become familiar with the educational strategies that educators use with all children with diverse learning characteristics. This will require that both theoretical and field based knowledge be applied throu
