Course Description

This course involves understanding the principles, problems, and issues affecting bilingual curriculum. It examines the rationale and philosophies of various models within bilingual education programs. The course also includes some of the major issues related to transfer of literacy competency from one language to another.

BED 5331 is a graduate course that provides insights and understanding about both curriculum and instruction in bilingual and English-as-a-Second-Language settings. The course begins with examining the historical and political underpinnings of bilingual and ESL education. Then the course continues with gathering information about curriculum implications that effect methods of language and reading and writing in English and Spanish. Effective evaluation methods in literacy and bi-literacy are also included. Finally, the course examines how aspects of language, literacy, and diversity are addressed in today’s classrooms and relate this knowledge to the State of Texas standards for bilingual education and ESL.
