Course Description
Accounting is the principal information system within organizations that identifies, measures, aggregates and communicates economic information to facilitate decisions. In today's globally competitive information age, accounting has assumed greater managerial significance and many organizations have committed substantial resources to revamp their accounting systems. Numerous innovations in accounting practices have occurred in response to the changing competitive, technological and organizational environment. Accordingly, this course has been designed in three modules to introduce both fundamental accounting principles and some selected accounting innovations.
The financial reporting module focuses on external users such as current and potential investors, lenders, labor unions, and government as well as on key internal users such as top management. The cost management module deals with information generated for managers and other employees to promote efficient and effective use of resources. The management control module pertains to a study of systems designed for performance measurement and evaluation, rewarding and motivating employees, and coordinating business operations.
