Course Title: English Composition I
Campus Course Code: ENGL 1301
Campus: UT Brownsville
Program: GenEd
Course Description
Composition I introduces you to the kinds of writing you will be expected to produce across disciplines and on the job. You will learn how to write essays that present your position on current events and issues. In this course, you will learn the processes and strategies used by effective writers. By observing the style and structure of effective essays, you will develop an understanding of the rhetorical techniques used by experienced writers. By observing the perspective or bias of the author, you will gradually develop a sense of how to read critically, noticing not only what the author says, but also his or her underlying reason for expressing a given point of view. By the end of the semester, your own essays will be expected to include many of the characteristics of effective writing that you observe in the course readings.
Research skills are incorporated throughout the course. You will be using sources from the library and from the Web. You will learn how to locate information in databases and online sources, synthesize that information, and write essays with appropriate support and documentation.
