Course Description

This course is designed to examine the principles involved in law enforcement supervision - specifically, but not limited to: concepts of management, leadership, psychology, complaint and grievance procedures, morale building, duties and responsibilities of command level personnel, supervisory problems and responsibilities relating to discipline, and internal affairs investigations. The design of this course is to provide the advanced student an opportunity for an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of police supervision. Effective supervision and management requires an understanding of the complex relationships between mission, goals, objectives and work plans in the law enforcement environment. The basic theme of the course is to unite the concepts of leadership, supervision, management and motivation theories as they relate to police supervisors.


Objectives and Activities

This course presents the opportunity for students to achieve the following performance objectives:

  • To recognize the basic leadership theories.
  • To differentiate the concepts of leadership and management
  • To demonstrate the use of personal computer word processing skills in preparation of written assignments.
  • To trace the history and rationale behind traditional perspective of police supervision.
  • To illustrate a working knowledge of leadership principles as they are applied in a law enforcement organization.
  • To analyze management issues related to selection, recruiting and retention of personnel.
  • To trace the development of the humanistic approaches to management.
  • To describe the complaint and grievance procedures, from receipt to resolution.
  • To distinguish various theories of motivation and reward, both internal and external.

Prerequisites: English 1301, English 1302 or English 2311, and an English 2000 level literature course (6 credits).
