Course Description

LIST 5350 is a practical, hands-on, clinical-based course in which graduate students work one-on-one with a child to:

  • conduct a variety of formal and informal reading assessments
  • analyze the data obtained from those assessments
  • develop a profile of reading strengths and weaknesses
  • design a tutoring plan specific to that one child
  • create weekly lessons designed to build on student strengths and develop weaker areas

In addition, graduate students will collaboratively:

  • share information about their child in case studies
  • complete assigned readings and other class assignments

It will be the responsibility of each graduate student to locate, secure the necessary permission, and work with a child to complete the requirements of this course.

LIST 5350 should provide an opportunity for students to work both directly and vicariously (through the discussion of cases) with a variety of children at all levels of literacy development (remedial to gifted). This course should enhance one's understanding of the reading process, the problems that students often encounter in reading, and allow the opportunity to develop and refine applied skills for working with students with diverse reading needs.

Selected topics to be considered:

  • factors affecting reading development
  • stages of reading and writing development
  • emergent literacy & concepts of print
  • word knowledge including sight words, decoding skills, and expanded word meanings
  • comprehension
  • reading and spelling relationships
  • role of metacognition in reading
  • balanced literacy
  • types of reading problems
